If only real life was as simple as working on a Linux box…

If only real life was as simple as working on a Linux box…

So, I’ve done a test and it seems that, while xkcd are made of win, the method indicated in the following instructional cartoon doesn’t work.

I’ve tried many different ways of putting the instruction across, none seem to have worked thus far:

  • sudo project be complete
  • sudo stop making changes at the last minute
  • sudo be reasonable with your last minute requirements

So far, none of these commands have worked and people are starting to look at me funny. Real life sudo, the ultimate power, that doesn’t work.

Sudo. The ultimate power.

The reality of software development projects

The reality of software development projects

Another oldie but a goody, making a bit of fun of the software development process. Mostly the massive amount of miscommunication that goes on during the software development process. And there always is… massive amounts. On the other hand, you must consider that from a developers point of view, user’s don’t speak a civilised language anyway…

Basically the only way to ever avoid disaster on a software engineering project is to have awesome developers who can roll with the punches. There are always punches and the ones who can’t roll and accommodate break and broken developers don’t develop awesome software. They definitely don’t release awesome software.

Flexibility in your development team, then, is generally your only hope of putting out passable software in a reasonable time.

The reality of software development.

The reality of software development.

This is why I make my developers from willow branches.

Another day in the life of a programmer…

Another day in the life of a programmer…

An insightful comic strip outlining a day in the life of a programmer. It’s almost like the creator of the strip was thinking of @nil_semaj while working on it. Seriously, the resemblance is uncanny…

People who don’t develop software don’t really appreciate the massive amount of frustration that can be caused by looking for a bug that, after hours and hours of looking at every possibility turns out to be a simple typo. It happens. Hopefully not often… and when it does, blame it on bad error messages…

This is Finda! Kicking ass and chewing bubblegum on the net since ’10

In the immortal words Duke Nukem, an epic character made of win and awesome: “We kick ass and chew bubblegum… and we’re all out of gum.

ORLY? That's right. We're all out of gum.

Awesome Finda engineer quotes: 0×01

Awesome Finda engineer quotes: 0×01

I just overheard the following exchange between kevins (Finda software engineer) and jerryl (Finda software tester):

“Hey Jerry, there’s something wrong with Redmine!”, said kevins.

“What’s wrong?”, asked jerryl.

“It’s full of bugs Jerry!”, replied kevins.

Haha, I love developer humour.

Linux vs. Windows vs. Mac

Linux vs. Windows vs. Mac

An oldie but a goodie, how various fan boys see the three platforms…

Every developer has his preference I suppose and we don’t always see eye to eye. Since I do a bunch of stuff in C#.NET which sort of only works on Windows, I just live with that and like I said previously, I like Windows 7 quite a bit. Most of my other stuff is done for Linux and Linux being what it is, it’s usually possible to get it done on Windows with little fuss. That or a terminal to a Linux box. OSX on the other hand… I’ve tried man, I’ve tried hard to like it but I just can’t do it. I have a dual-boot Macbook Pro running OSX and Win7 and try as I might, I just can’t like the Mac OS. It’s just… not right. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a bunch of things Mac does right but on a whole, it’s just… wrong.

(Go ahead, freak out, call me names! Sticks and stones people, sticks and stones.)
